Volunteers at our construction sites help with all aspects of home building. No experience is necessary, but if you have it, greatThere are many tasks that require only a willingness to learn and work with others. By working side-by-side with other volunteers, a crew leader, and our partner family, MHFH volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership. All volunteers on the construction site must be at least 16 years of age or older.

Home Weatherization Initiative
Many residents of Knox County live in homes that are ill equipped to keep families warm. Our brand new weatherization program aims to help low-income households achieve a reduction in monthly energy bills and educate families on energy efficiency. The scope of work determines the cost for each project and is achieved through elbow grease and short term loans to the families. No experience is necessary – you will be shown what to do by the Team Leader. Weatherization days offer volunteers the opportunity to work with the partner family on a short-term project that can make a big difference in a family’s life.

The ReStore
Volunteers at our ReStore help with all aspects of running the store – picking up donated merchandise, cleaning and pricing items, and helping customers purchase furniture, appliances, and building materials during business hours. The ReStore is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm, but some of the volunteer opportunities can occur at other times. All profits from the ReStore are used to fund our building program.

Midcoast Habitat Committees
Publicity
The Publicity Committee publishes periodic newsletters, maintains this website, communicates with the media, and manages the public image of Midcoast Habitat for Humanity. This committee needs people with writing skills, computer skills, printing equipment, or photography experience.

Faith Relations
Midcoast HFH relies on faith communities for much of its support. The Faith Relations Committee works to develop and nurture covenant partnerships with local congregations. Members of this committee should be willing to approach their own congregations as well as those of other faith communities to explain the mission of Midcoast Habitat and to solicit support.

Development and Fund Raising
The Development Committee implements the fundraising policies and goals of the Board of Directors by developing a strategic plan for soliciting donations of money, materials and professional services. The committee works closely with prospective donors, who must be informed about the work of Midcoast Habitat before they are willing to invest. Development efforts are multi-faceted and include public campaigns, partnerships with local businesses, and special fundraising events.

Acquisition
This committee identifies and evaluates potential building sites and possible renovation projects for Midcoast Habitat homes. The committee works closely with individuals and municipalities to solicit donations of land and possible homes. This committee needs people with flexible schedules and experience in real estate, construction and affordable housing.

Building
The Building Committee acts as the general contractor for Midcoast Habitat construction projects. The committee oversees all phases of construction, working with the Executive Director and Construction Supervisor on scheduling, materials procurement, and coordination of volunteer and professional labor. Members do not have to be construction professionals, but construction experience is desirable.

Family Selection & Support
This committee evaluates applications for Midcoast Habitat houses, selects (with the approval of the Board of Directors) Partner Families, and then serves as a liaison between them and Midcoast Habitat. Choosing a Partner Family is a multistep process that must be fair, objective and nondiscriminatory. This committee visits with prospective families to evaluate their current needs, and then works with partner families on tasks such as budgeting to ensure their success as homeowners. Family Selection & Support also plans MHFH’s home dedications and periodic Partner Family events.

ReStore
This committee oversees the operations of the ReStore, training new volunteers, planning special sales and events, and making sure store policies and procedures are in place.

Weatherization
A brand new initiative for MHFH, the Weatherization Committee oversees all aspects of this program, finding partner families, soliciting materials, and setting up volunteer dates.

WomenBuild
Planning events and build times to support HFHI’s WomenBuild program is the focus of this committee. Any women with a desire to see MHFH grow and to help engage more women in this effort are invited to participate!
