Easy ways you can make a lasting impact
GIFTS FROM DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
You can create a grant recommendation from your donor-advised fund to support Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
Final distribution of contributions remaining in a donor-advised fund is governed by the contract you completed when you created your fund. Please consider naming Habitat as a successor of your account. Alternatively, you can name us as the successor for a portion of the account value, leaving the remaining portion for your heirs.
As with all gift planning, you should consult with your tax advisor and lawyer to determine what planned gift strategy is best for your current tax situation and income requirements. Consulting estate-planning professionals will ensure that your wishes to make a lasting impact will be fulfilled.
BEQUEST BY WILL OR FAMILY TRUST
Talk to your financial advisor, lawyer, or estate planner about including a gift to Midcoast Habitat in your will. Should they have any questions, they can contact admin@midcoasthabitat.org
A bequest to Midcoast Habitat creates a memorial that lives on and helps change lives for local families for generations to come. Ask your attorney to include a bequest to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity in your will.
Sample Bequest Language:
“After taking care of all expenses, debts and other provisions, I give, devise and bequeath ___ percent of the rest and residue [or $___ if a specific amount] to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity [Tax ID# 01-0455355] currently with administrative offices at 680 Commercial Street, Rockport, ME 04856.”
RETIREMENT OR LIFE INSURANCE PLANS
Did you know that income and estate taxes can take up to 75% of your retirement plan assets, if left to your family? One way to avoid this is to designate the retirement plan as a charitable gift.
You can make Midcoast Habitat for Humanity the beneficiary, or partial beneficiary, of your retirement plan. It’s easy! Obtain a beneficiary change form from your retirement plan administrator. On that form, indicate the amount or percentage you wish to donate to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity. You can change your beneficiary again in the future, should your needs or wishes change.
We suggest that you talk with your advisors about whether this type of gift will work for you.
Additionally, you can designate Midcoast Habitat for Humanity as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy. Contact your insurance plan administrator for a beneficiary change form, and indicate the amount or percentage you wish to donate to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
If you include a charitable gift in your estate plans, you may want to talk with your attorney about the advantages of using your retirement plan assets to fund an estate gift to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCDs)
A qualified charitable distribution is an otherwise taxable distribution from an IRA owned by someone over age 70½ or over that is paid directly from the IRA to a qualified charity. Your qualified charitable distributions can satisfy all or part the amount of your year-end, required minimum distribution from your IRA.
You can make a qualified charitable distribution by contacting your retirement plan administrator. Transfers must be made directly to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity and can amount to up to $100,000 per year. The transfer must be made by the IRA trustee or custodian directly to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
Please consult your financial advisor to determine whether this is a good choice for you.
GIFT ANNUITIES
You’d like to help but need the income; or maybe you have a highly-appreciated stock that pays a low dividend but don’t want to trigger the capital gains tax. Whether funded with cash or stock, a gift annuity will provide a handsome cash flow that may be partially tax-free! You’ll also get a partial tax deduction now.
GIFTS OF STOCK
Do you have shares on long-term appreciated stock you might consider donating? You can simply transfer these shares directly to Midcoast Habitat for Humanity. You’ll get a full tax deduction for the entire market value, avoid capital gains, and do your part in helping to create stronger communities.
